It used similar HTML/JS based interface and the game responded to the same commands. We added them back to this mod because they accidentally? left the boxscore hardcode from NHL 2003 intact. This game never originally had them, either.
The boxscores were gone since NHL 2004 by the way.
NHL08 was still the best next-gen EA game though. The NHL 13 game engine itself ain't all that bad though. But the kiddies who buy the series don't really care. I mean, the whole game revolves around a full-blown 3D hockey engine. I don't think I'm thinking of the same things you are, but playing Be A Pro as a junior goalie for example, you can't go back and look at the boxscores for any games you didn't play.
